The Third Thursday Songwriter Showcase is an ongoing performance series that features the best of Arizona songwriters/storytellers, bringing their music and their creative process to you “In The Round.” Host Eddy Roswell focuses each show on the art, the craft, the process and the often-crazy muse that drives contemporary songwriting. Each performance features three dedicated songsmiths, taking turns sharing one of their songs and the story of its creation. We strive to deliver an eclectic mix of voices–female, male, young up-and-comers, and veteran writers and performers, and a variety of genres and approaches. There is no better way to connect directly and intimately with the makers of original music.
Eddy Roswell, Host
Eddy Roswell (aka Ed Skibbe) spent 20 years touring and playing sessions in bands throughout the West and Midwest. Then he spent 20 years as a professional songwriter in Nashville, 16 of those as a staff writer on Music Row. Now he travels the West, playing his own songs and a few favorites as a solo artist, in a duo with multi-instrumentalist, Robert Hoke, and with his band Phantom Ranch.
Eric is two-time champion of the Phoenix Blues Society’s Blues Showdown and has performed in Memphis, TN at the International Blues Challenge, where he was a semi-finalist. He has been a Finalist in the Tucson Folk Festival’s Songwriting Contest, and has been tapped for the prestigious Songwriter’s Showcase produced by Tempe Center for the Arts, filmed for PBS distribution. He’s a featured performer at the Prescott Center for the Arts Dylan Tribute, and has headlined shows at the Highlands Center and the Flagstaff Folk Project in Arizona.
Eric has been active in the Phoenix Valley music scene since the mid 70s, performing solo or as part of any number of bands. He’s a favorite on the Folk and Blues Festival circuits, not only for his dynamic performances but for his open tuning and slide guitar workshops.
With soaring vocals and organic arrangements, Eric’s original compositions reflect his musical influences, but come from a place all their own. He writes from experience about the human condition – at times sensitive, at times humorous, always thought-provoking. His arrangements and delivery encompass a spectrum of styles, from delicate fingerpicking to raucous, bluesy bottleneck slide.
Robby sings original musical stories steeped in reality and imagination, happiness and sorrow – delivered through the musical strings of multiple instruments, played skillfully and passionately. Robby’s songwriting and his vocal style is evocative of an organic urban acoustic music vibe that is enhanced by diverse and dynamic rhythms and grooves. He uses the instrumentation as an equal, interconnected partner of his songs and not just for melodic accompaniment. Robby’s songwriting has not gone unnoticed across the valley and state – he is the winner of the Songwriter Contest at the Tucson Folk Festival and a finalist in the band contest at the Pickin in the Pines Music Festival. He has also performed at the Tempe Center for the Arts Songwriters Showcases III and VII. Robby’s musical versatility makes it possible for him to be a solo act or to include other talented musician friends in a duo, trio or quartet setting.
