​“The ​Transplanted ​Gardener” ​workshop ​help ​locals ​and ​new ​community ​members ​alike ​to ​design, ​select, ​grow, ​and ​maintain ​their ​landscapes.

Jim ​MacKenzie ​will ​present ​a ​compilation ​of ​the ​lessons ​he ​learned ​over ​more ​than ​30 ​years ​of ​gardening ​in ​the ​low ​desert. ​It ​focuses ​on ​the ​information ​he ​wished ​he ​knew ​when ​he ​began ​as ​he ​struggled ​with ​the ​extreme ​Phoenix ​climate.

Julie ​Knapp ​will ​present ​basic ​landscape ​design ​techniques ​to ​create ​your ​dream ​ornamental ​and ​edible ​yard ​in ​the ​low ​desert. ​You ​will ​leave ​with ​ideas ​for ​your ​yard ​to ​make ​it ​pay ​you ​back ​through ​food ​production ​yet ​provide ​an ​elegant ​and ​functional ​yard ​that ​is ​adapted ​to ​our ​local ​climate.

Learning ​Objectives:
-Understand ​Climate ​differences, ​temperature, ​humidity, ​precipitation, ​and ​soil.
-Apply ​the ​different ​growing ​season ​to ​selection ​of ​plants ​and ​times ​to ​plant.
-Know ​what ​plants ​are ​adapted ​to ​this ​climate.
-Define ​your ​goals ​and ​family ​needs ​for ​your ​yard.
-Plant ​vegetable ​gardens ​and ​food ​forests ​to ​make ​your ​yard ​work ​for ​you.
-Combine ​turf, ​ornamental ​trees ​& ​plants ​with ​food ​and ​medicinal ​plants.

Master ​Gardeners ​Jim ​MacKenzie ​and ​Julie ​Knapp
Jim ​has ​been ​a ​Master ​Gardener ​for ​nine ​years ​and ​has ​lived ​in ​Arizona ​since ​1983. ​He ​says ​he ​has ​made ​every ​mistake ​a ​non-native ​gardener ​could ​make.
Julie ​is ​Master ​Gardener ​and ​Certified ​Agriscape ​Designer. ​She ​helps ​people ​combine ​ornamental ​landscaping ​with ​edible ​plants ​in ​an ​attractive ​manner. ​She ​has ​designed ​numerous ​backyards ​in ​the ​East ​Valley ​and ​the ​Native ​American ​Edible ​Garden ​for ​Cloud ​Song, ​a ​Native ​American ​community ​center ​at ​Scottsdale ​Community ​College. ​Julie ​is ​a ​writer, ​blogger, ​and ​has ​taught ​journalism ​classes ​for ​ASU ​and ​SCC ​for ​more ​than ​30 ​years.
