«We need to look hard at the stories we create, and wrestle with them. Retell and retell them, and work with them like clay. It is in the retelling and returning that they give us their wisdom.» — Marni Gillard
The magic of oral storytelling is not necessarily to entertain the audience but the ability to harness the power in sharing your most intimate moments. Using storytelling as a tool to bring self awareness and healing to personal trauma is a productive way of externally processing. In this workshop we will explore the transformative techniques of oral storytelling and how to apply these techniques to our own stories and experiences. Please bring an open mind and if you have a story you've been working on telling we can work on that too!
Jessie Balli is an Arizona native and one of Phoenix New Times' 100 Creatives of 2016 for storytelling. She is the host and producer of Chatterbox, a storytelling open mic in Downtown Phoenix. She believes there is power in owning your most vulnerable moments on stage. You can find her belting her favorite tunes at karaoke or camping under the stars most other nights of the week.
Wasted Ink Zine Distro's «Off the Page» is a monthly spoken word workshop and open mic offering local Arizona poets, writers, and storytellers opportunities to create, present, and publish their work in a brave space. A brave space is grounded in self-awareness and those in that space place themselves in positions of vulnerability as a form of collective action. It is a commitment that our words be one of many doorways to larger community driven conversations.
Performance priority for our open mic will be given to those who attend the workshop.
Special thanks to the event creators Anastasia Freyermuth, Charissa Lucille, and Joy Young.
