Sgt. Ryan Castillo Family
Ryan joined the Army in March 2003. It was his way of giving back after 911. His service started like any other, nothing too exciting, but the most excitement he had seen in his 18 yrs of life. He jumped around from being active duty in Colorado Springs at Ft Carson, then switched to Colorado National Guard in 2005. After moving to AZ in 2006, he transferred to the AZ National Guard in 2007. He picked full time Active Duty Orders (ADOS) with the AZ National Guard, Unit 198th RSG. In 2010 he deployed to IRAQ with the 2220th Transport Unit where he did an active tour for Convoy Security in Iraq. In October 2010 his truck was struck by and IED where he was critically injured ,which has caused many struggles since then. He returned back to the US from IRAQ in April 2011. At that time he tried to work full time with the Arizona National Guard to provide for his family. He was able to work up until May 2012 and was released due to medical issues. At that time he decided to go back to school via the GI-Bill while being a “M/Day” Soldier in the AZ National Guard.
He realized quickly how hard it was to provide for a family of 5 on unemployment and food stamps while trying to go to school. He had to drop out of school to find a full time job to provide for his family. For 2 years he was able to work at a call center with a gentleman that he was deployed with as one of his managers. Because of the medical issues he was unable to keep that job or work since. During that time he went through a divorce and met his current wife and created a blended family of 8 and then added one more of theirs together which now brings them to the beautiful family of 9. Ryan is currently trying to enroll in trade school via his GI-Bill to learn a skill that he can still do with his disabilities that will allow him to provide a more substantial income for his family.
