Author and former Phoenix actor Cindy Brown was planning to set her latest mystery at a fictional version of Phoenix’s Orpheum Theatre because she loved the beauty of the historic theater. “Then I toured the theater and talked to the docents,” Brown said. “Turns out the Orpheum has several ghosts in residence, including a cat.” The ghost stories were great fodder for Brown’s fifth mystery, The Phantom of Oz (Henery Press, Jan. 2018), whose titular spirit also resembles the ghost who haunts the Hotel San Carlos, where Brown once had a flower shop.
To give back to the theater that inspired her (and maybe appease a ghost), Brown will do a book signing and reading at the legendary theater on April 17th, donating all profits to the Friends of the Orpheum Theatre. The fundraising event will bookend noon and 1 p.m. tours of the theater, led by the Friends’ knowledgeable docents. The free tours last approximately one (1) hour, and Brown will read, talk about the book, and sign copies afterward.
