Join us as {9} Collective presents the work of Belgian artist Allison Lee in “Track of Time”, First Friday, May 4th, 2018, 6-10 PM and Third Friday, May 18th, 6-10 PM at {9} The Gallery, 1229 Grand Avenue, Phoenix, AZ.

“Track of Time” is a series of work that features the contrast of two worlds coming together as haunting pieces. Past and present, Phoenix and Europe, landscapes and cityscapes, paintings and illustrations. This exhibition is about time, and the influence of time. Time that's uncontrollable. Nostalgia and melancholy. The scene is deceptively cozy. Eldritch images you can't escape, mashed together with the present time. Memories that are popping up in a dream state. Filled with symbolism and hidd...en layers, the pieces are both seductive and repulsive, giving them a magnetic quality. The viewer doesn't know if he should feel invited or scared. Inspired by artists like Christian Boltanski and Anselm Kiefer, “Track of Time” invites you to stand still and wonder but leaves you with an unnerving sense of urgency.

About the Artist: Allison Lee’s work has its roots in a sense of hostility encroaching on a world that was once peaceful and promising. Skipping the exit route of the cynic, she expresses her craving for firm roots, yet she’s suspicious of anything that presents itself as harmonious, stable or permanent. An early influence on her creative output is a premonition of disruption.

Hailing from the town of Erpe-Mere, Lee discovered her love for painting at 14 while attending an art school in Gent, Belgium. Her majors in high school were fashion and textile design. She studied visual arts in college, graduating with great honors in 2010 and went on to study audiovisual arts/animation. Her mixed media illustrations especially embody this versatility.

Lee’s work serves a cocktail of the familiar and the unsettling and her experience as an expat has only added to that. Having grown up in Belgium — a country full of contrasts and home to lots of surrealist artists — she moved to the US in 2014 and currently resides in Phoenix. She fuels her work with both antagonistic and appeasing motives.

Allison Lee’s work has appeared in galleries and in the media. The Belgian magazine, “Rondom”, recently published a featured article on Lee and her upcoming work for “Track of Time”.

The gallery is also open Fridays and Saturdays from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM and by appointment by calling (480) 454-5929.
