NMVC Hikes in May
Every Thursday — Meet at NMVC before 7 AM to form carpools to drive to the trailheads, except as noted… Bring water and snacks/lunch. We may stop to eat after the hike.
June 7 Van Deren Cabin, Sedona
I have not done this hike before but I have good info from Marc Czinar’s article in AZ Republic. The hike is a 5.6 mile loop mostly on the Chuckwagon Trail. We will take a short side trip to see the historic cabin preserved by the Forest Service. This is a moderate hike. Bring water and a snack. We can stop for eats and drinks in Sedona after the hike.
June 14 Groom Creek to Lookout Tower, Prescott
We will hike up to the forest lookout tower on top of Spruce Mtn. We may be able to enter the lookout tower if it is occupied. The hike is about 7 miles round trip with a 1500 foot climb and is moderately difficult. The elevations vary from 6300 at the bottom to 7800 at the top. Bring water and snacks. We can stop in Prescott for eats and drinks afterwards.
June 21 Horton Spring, Payson
From SR 260 we will drive north on Tonto Creek Road to near the fish hatchery. We will hike east on the Highline Trail for 3 miles to Horton Spring. After a snack break we will hike down trail 285 to where we left a car. Bring water and snacks. We can stop in Payson for eats and drinks afterwards.
June 28 Skunk and Fay Canyons, Flagstaff
The hike is off Lake Mary Road. We will hike northeast in Skunk Canyon to the Arizona Trail and turn right. In less than a mile we turn right on the Fay Canyon trail and hike back southwest to where we left one car. The hike is about 7 miles long and fairly flat. Bring water and snacks. We can stop in Flagstaff or Munds Park for eats and drinks afterwards.
